the last hoorah

there are several plants in my garden making their final show of summer. i took some snaps this morning of a few blooms that i am fairly certain i won't be enjoying again until next spring.
african iris
mind you, they aren't performing gangbusters or anything like that - it is as if they are saying - hey, don't forget about me, i'm still here for now. so i want to give them their last big cheer before they are through. it's easy to celebrate "firsts" but what about "lasts"... sometimes we just don't know when the last will be and often it is overlooked. so here's a final round of applause to the beauties i will miss until next year when they faithfully reappear.

crepe myrtle

delicate society garlic

i guess after the two days of good steady showers we had last week the rain lilies
decided to make one last show.

not the least of these are the numerous varieties of caladiums which are soon to fade away and sorely missed. But they deserve the biggest shout-out of the summer! well done.

  1. the african iris is stunning. and i liked your post. the title and sentiment made me a little sad but it reminded me about my son who's growing up too fast..."if I had known this was the last time he would crawl, I'd have gotten on the floor and crawled with him"...if I had known this was the last time he would say Pooh with a 'B' I would have recorded it"...

  2. GMTA! I tried last night to post pictures of what's blooming in my yard right now. That iris is GORGEOUS! Great picture!

  3. mlm: thanks. the firsts and lasts you refer to are so much more important than flowers. my hope for you is to take in all of his moments with great appreciation for the time he is in... you can never get them back once they are gone.

sophie: thanks... i look forward to viewing your blooms as well.
