Freida Hemple Is Her Name

She's a rather outstanding figure in the partially shady native garden.
Freida Hemple Caladium's brilliantly clad red face and central veins are surrounded by an equally rich value of green margin. Simplicity makes her a popular favorite among gardeners.
With her height of 18 -24" she works well placed behind the border edging of variegated aztec grass and society garlic. Across the swath of grass Freida complements 'White Queen' highlighting her magenta veins.

Vivid hues give Freida Hemple her eye-catching quality. Woven in between foundational plants of coontie, coral bean, bromeliads, and crimson pentas she will be a cheerful and welcome face in the garden all summer long.

  1. Meems, you have the most wonderful caladium collection. I love seeing pictures of all the different types. The combination of heat and rain has been good for the caladiums. They are really beautiful this year.

  3. I have Frieda Hemple with White Christmas in front, bordering a pathway. They are in full shade and I love the color they add to this section of my garden. You are the one who inspired me to order the bulbs. Imagine my shock when I planted them and they actually sprouted!

  5. I like that one too, but I've been seeing more and more Thai selections lately with lime green, chartreuse and pink leaves! I'm holing out for one of those. :)

  7. Siesta Sister,
This is the first year I've given each variety individual postings. They DO love the heat and humidity.

    FlowerLady,
I'm loving the vibrant red in this popular variety.

    Nanette,
That's the thing... they are JUST SO EASY TO GROW ... it is hard to mess up. They make any gardener look good.LOL

    Chris,
This is one I've had for many years although I added to them in this section this year.

    Steve,
The Thai varieties are pretty pricey! But stunning.

    FG,
    Beauty indeed... so simple, too.

  9. That's a lot! So beautiful, nobody will say caladium is not beautiful. I think we also have that variant, but we control its growth or else i will think it is invasive. lol.

  11. Grace,
Reds are a color I lean towards in almost every planting bed but I do like the echo effect here, too. Thanks.

    Andrea,
How I would love the problem of invasive caladiums. LOL

    Gail,
Any plant that holds up in our awful summer heat is truly a friend. :-)
