I Heart February in Florida

Bright, cheery blooms, blue skies, crisp cool air with oodles of sunshine is what February is supposed to be in Florida. And it has not disappointed. The weather was stellar this weekend. I wish I could share it with my northern friends.

Take a peek with me around a few of the weekend scenes in the garden.

There is promise of new life everywhere I turn. Buds on azaleas, fiddleheads forming, and tropicals appearing up from the sleepy winter earth

And shoots of emerging growth are promising spring is so close by.

Holly fern fiddleheads say Happy Valentine's Day.

From Hoe and Shovel to you, dear reader.

  3. Great pics! What is that little blue flower in the pic after the pic of the Ti's?

Yesterday was such a beautiful day. After tennis and walking I settled in for week pulling from one of my flower beds. Checked the 10 day forecast this morning...nothing but warm weather...even an "80" next summer. Bring on the warmth! Have so much to do in the garden...looking forward to every minute of it.

  8. Meems: Happy Valentine's Day! Your Feb garden is very spring like with so many colors and the new lifes! Love the combinations of your containers, especially the purple hearts and brom combo! Do you have two kinds of bulbines, yellow and orange? I don't have the yellow one, not sure if they behaves the more less same as the orange one. Yours is full of buds right now, beautiful!

  9. Those fiddleheads are joy itself! Thanks for the offer to share your lovely weather with us up north. I'll just take a shower without the fan on, shut my eyes and pretend I'm in humid Florida (I'm sure the humidity feels good in Feb - nice for your skin).

  14. Di,
So nice to see you. Enjoy these wonderful weather days.

    Daisy,
I know you are loving the sunshine like I am!

    Siesta Sister,
Thank you. It is the lone survivor on a large bush that was frosted and burned just when it was ready to bloom all over. Susan over at Simply Susan gave it to me and I can't remember the name off-hand. I will try to find it for you and repost it in this comment section (later).

  15. FlowerLady,
Thank you for strolling with me ~ Happy Valentine's Day to you.

    Chris,
It really helped me in digging out the sod. But so many other chores, too. I LOVE it.

    Kay,
I'm loving the forecast! I didn't even notice the heart on the holly ferns until I uploaded my disc... how cooperative they were! Happy gardening.

  16. Floridagirl,
THIS is what Florida winter is all about! Blue skies and NO humidity. I'm reveling in it as much as possible... while it last.

    Ami,
The broms and purple queen have turned out to be an easy combination. Both require very little irrigation and they are good complements of one another. Yes, I have both bulbines~ yellow and orange. I prefer the yellow but it is hard to find. I gave in and purchased some orange. (Now I just divide and transplant I have so many). They behave exactly the same. It's just a matter of preference for color. All are loaded with buds and flowers this time of year. More so than in the summer.

    VW,
NO HUMIDITY is what I LOVE about February. It won't be long and the muggy days will creep back in. We have to enjoy it while we can... trying to get all my big gardening projects accomplished before humidity returns.

  17. Susan,
It does feel like spring this week.Brisk mornings, lots of clear sunshine in the day and dropping temps in the evening. My kind of weather! The plants are loving it, too.

    Carolyn,
YES! I could use a couple of assitants. Wouldn't that be fabulous. You were here for a fairly mild winter as they have gone the last two years. You might want to think about that a routine in winter after all the snow you got this year.

    Janis,
Thank you, dear girl. Happy Valentine's Day to you.

    africanaussie,
That is so nice... I'm looking forward to seeing how everything returns after being knocked back from the cold. It's happening already with this mild February. Fingers crossed it stays that way. Have a lovely day!

  21. Siesta Sister,
The name of the plant with the blue flowers is Blue Sage 'Eranthemum nervosum'. It is an older variety not found in garden centers. Susan (over at Simply Susan) gifted a seedling to me and I have made many root cuttings from it. It is cold sensitive unfortunately. But I love the blueish leaves and texture even all summer/fall.The winter blooms were full of buds when the first December frost took it down 2/3 of the way. Now there are several blooms on the bottom... I am happy to root a cutting for you and send it to you later in the spring when it comes back. Just let me know. You can e-mail me at hoe and shovel garden dot com.

Left same comment on the RFF post as well... not sure where you were checking back.Sorry it took me a while.
    Happy gardening, Meems
