Day 1: Twelve Days of Christmas in a Florida Garden

Just for fun and also because we just keep right on gardening through December here in Florida, I'm going to challenge myself and post something from my garden everyday for the next twelve days. Think of it as excerpts from Hoe & Shovel.

It may just be a flower (or two) or it may be an informative post or it may involve a give-away. It may include lots of thoughts or none at all.

If you'd like to join me and post your own 12 days ... feel free. Just drop me a comment and let me know you're doing it also and I'll come check out your 12 days too.

Day 1: Resting Place

The newest addition to my garden. An old wrought iron chair (it is heavy) I have had my eye on for a very long time. My mom gifted it to me this weekend. Its new home is on the pathway in the side yard leading to the veggie garden.

Hark, how the welkin rings,
‘Glory to the King of kings’;
Peace on Earth,
and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled.–Charles Wesley (1707–88)

  1. Very good idea and like the picture you posted today we might get to see areas that aren't regularly posted. I am doing something similiar because I actually only have 12 days left in Florida. I may only get through next Tuesday though.

  2. I like the Christmasy theme and header. I will be following your 12 days but it is too wet to garden here, though I planted some bulbs on Saturday. Hopefully I will get something done each weekend - if it stops raining! Weekdays I only get to see the garden briefly as I leave for work, I hate getting up in the dark and coming home from work in the dark. I will enjoy watching your garden and know that you are enjoying some nice weather - it is always sunny somewhere.

    Best wishes Sylvia (England)

  3. What a beautiful header photo. Very Christmasy of you. This 12 days feature will be fun. It is appropriate you start of with a gift. ;) I can see why you were wanting that chair. It is beautiful. It fits in to your garden perfectly.

  4. Jake,
You are reading my mind. I will be posting some photos of areas not highlighted too often. It's hard to believe you are taking off to KY in the midst of our best (weather)season. I know you are excited though... maybe you'll have a white Christmas.

    Sylvia,
Someone just told me yesterday how much rain you (and Ireland) have been experiencing. Planting bulbs is a good reminder to us that the garden is still working for us even when it might not seem like it. This time of year can be hard on a gardener when the daytime hours are shortened. We like our daylight don't we!

    Lisa,
I'm more in the (Christmasy)mood here (on my blog) it seems... I need to get busy decorating the house. I'd rather be outside. We're expecting rain tonight and tomorrow... maybe that will keep me in long enough to bring out the Christmas decs. I'm tickled you like the chair, too. I am so pleased with how it fits in at Hoe & Shovel.

  6. hey Meems,

How are you doing? I love your idea of the twelve day of Christmas and I love your header pics. I haven't been by here lately and hope you've had a great thanksgiving. I am very busy trying to get my kitchen rebuilt in time for Christmas. The new roof is on and the ceiling finished just to paint and put the molding on. The rest is in shambles. Will keep you updated. I may just take part in your 12 days of celebration. Take care my friend and hugs and more hugs.

PS Sorry that I've missed some posts -- I'm so busy with family stuff lately and trying to land the next freelance job to cover the holidays and gardening projects! LOL

  10. I have just discovered your blog and will definitely be following it! I garden in tropical Australia (although I used to live in Florida USA) and so many of the plants you have are like mine. I just love your photos, and your plants look so healthy - maybe I will pick up some tips! I think I will do the 12 days, but start on the 12th so I do the 12 days leading up to Christmas.

  11. Yes, I am hoping for a white Christmas. Cold weather use to not effect me, so I am hoping I can get back to that. While I still complain once the temperatures it 70 about it being to hot, our high of 57 Friday looks so cold to me, lol.

  12. Darla,
It's like one of those things that slipped right in and feels like it's been there all along. Thanks for following the 12 days.

    Helen,
I'm doing great... thanks... and so good to 'see' you. No worries about not visiting I have been awful about it too... just so many other things to tend to these days. So happy for you getting a new kitchen... very exciting. Join us when you can. Hugs, my friend and don't work too hard... impossible I know.

    Gail,
We can tell ourselves we'll be sitting anyway... Thank you for the idea. :-)

    Susan,
Yay... look forward to your posts. It's actually easier to post one or two photos than creating an informative post... still an obligation though. We'll think of it as relief from the Christmas rush. :-)

    Cameron,
No worries... family is the most important thing always. Come when you can and always love having you around.

    Africanaussie,
So happy you found us and took the time to visit. Our climates are quite similar. Maybe it was an easy trasition for you from FL to Australia? Look forward to visiting you to see your 12 days.

    Jake,
It's so comical how our weather announcers say it is going to be "cold" when our temps dip into the 40's or 50's. Even though I'm a Florida girl through and through I can't tell you how much I look forward to our "cold" days. Bundle up and here's hoping for a white Christmas for you!

  13. Love that old chair, Meems... SO gorgeous and in a perfect place. I'll come down and 'sit a spell'....
    Hugs,

  14. Yes, I would love to join you, Meems, in your garden , that is, down there in beautiful, warm Florida where you can grow plants year 'round. Do you need an assistant to fluff up the mulch?

Do I sound green with envy? You betcha! Here are our 12 days of Christmas in Chicago : Chance of snow, snow, and more snow.

Alas, I have my childhood memories in a warmer clime, and sigh, I'll paint right through winter.

I feel warmer just viewing your 12 days of Christmas in your Florida garden :-)

Have a blessed day,
