Morning Light and New Life

A Swallowtail butterfly as it emerged in the early morning light and hung in utter stillness in my veggie garden. Its home while transforming was under the blade of an 18" high purple queen plant.

This is my entry for Gardening Gone Wild's August photo contest. The theme was "down on your knees".

Good luck to everyone participating.

  1. I am jealous of everone's Butterflies in Florida. I seriously only have Dragonflies in my yard. The only Butterflies I have seen are the small common yellow ones.

  3. Hiya Meems,
Seen your name many times and I finally made it to your blog.
What a treasure trove of beautiful pictures.
Talk about brinkmanship: you cut it fine, didn't you :-)

  4. Jake,
Don't despair about the butterflies. You have the perfect environment for them. Do a little research and plant a few host plants as well as nectar plants and you will soon see them everywhere. In Florida they hang around year round so it is never too late to get started. Those dragonflies eat mosquitoes and add quite a bit of life to any garden! I LOVE them as much as the butterflies.

    marmee,
Thanks, marmee for the kudos. It seems I am on my knees a lot taking photos and I have a thing about catching the light from the underside. But this photo is definitely about that abandoned chrysalis and its ex-occupant clinging close by. So happy they like my garden.

    Ewa,
    Thank you.

    Joco,
So happy you made it "finally" and that my photos are appealing. Yes, deadlines sometimes catch me off-guard. Brinkmanship? that's a good one.

  5. Beautiful morning photo, Meems. That Swallowtale is beautiful--but your picture is even better--with the lighting around you... Nothing better than NEW LIFE on a Sunday morning!

    Hugs,

  7. I'm really missing the swallowtails this year. Usually I have enough to bring a few caterpillars inside to watch the metamorphosis up close, but not a single caterpillar or butterfly this year. I wonder why!

  9. How true that it is when we spend the most time on our knees in prayer that we are the ones who undergo a metamorphosis like the caterpillar and are changed. Beautiful photo!

  10. Betsy,
    Nothing better... eternal value.

    Lisa,
    Oooo... I like that... soul!

    Robin,
I wonder, too. I remember seeing your cats in the past. So sorry but I hope you have others delighting you in the garden.

    Susie,
Thank you... what a nice thing to say. There are so many great photographs in the mix... it is always fun to participate no matter what.

    Island Rider,
Prayer is all about change... from the inside out and so goes the caterpillar to the butterfly. thanks for stopping by.
