"Possibility and promise greet me each day as I walk out into my garden. My vigor is renewed when I breathe in the earthiness and feel the dirt between my fingers. My garden is a peaceful spot to refresh my soul." Meems

december bloom day

in keeping with garden bloggers' bloom day originated and encouraged by Carol at May Dreams Garden in Indiana here is my offering of what's blooming this week in my garden.

mexican petunia sprouted new buds and blooms this week with sunny days peaking at 84 degrees

to my surprise there are a few caladiums hanging on to life here in sunny florida... hard to imagine but here they are defying the odds.

a native coneflower

at hoe and shovel we are actively gardening right through december. with plenty of sunshine, blue skies and mild temps here in central florida we don't take much of a break from the demands of our gardens.

pink impatiens line the curves of the front yard beds.

the ever-faithful begonias are still blooming- not as prolific as in the spring but they typically bloom all year long.

red new guinea impatiens, white impatiens, purple lantana, and pink impatiens cluster up to create a colorful view from my kitchen window.

magenta bromeliads and coleus add color and brighten up the greenery

i planted several poinsettias a couple of weeks ago which i don't think really count since it would have been hard to kill them in two weeks. but they are pretty and they help to get us in the Christmas spirit in florida where we have to create the look of Christmas since we don't have
much of a change of season.

i keep photos of more blooming things on the side bar and at the top of my blog for those who want to see more of my florida garden in december.

  2. Seeing your blooms helps us remember what color looks like, it's all white here in my Zone 5 garden with a nice 5 inches of snow on everything.

Thanks for sharing your blooms for bloom day!

  3. Looking at your pictures makes it hard to remember that Christmas is just a little over a week away. I know that your garden enjoyed last night's rain. Looks like we are in for a nice week with a little cooler temperatures. I have a feeling you will try to enjoy as much time outside as you can!

  4. Good job with your bloom day posting. We have too keep the pictures coming so our friends up North don’t forget what it is all about.
PS You were correct the yellow flowers were Kolanchoe, thanks.

  5. Great pics meems. I am still amazed at the amount of blooming you still have going on. We are expecting freezing temps again tonight. We don't get snow, and the grass is still green for the most part (may not be after tonight), but many of the trees are losing all there leaves and nothing is really blooming save a few potted plants. Being not that much further north I never really paid that close attention to the difference in temps, but that 10 degrees or so sure makes a difference when it comes to gardening.

  9. lisa: but you get to wear sweaters and jackets and cute knitted scarves... ahhhh all the wasted fashion we are left with here. (i actually did get to where a jacket last night woo-hoo)

carol: thank you for letting the rest of us in on the fun.

jane: but it is true... Christmas is a few days away and coming faster each moment. i WAS so thankful for the rain. even though there is quite a bit of debris on my lawn from the high winds that brought the cool weather --i am thankful it is finally cool.

Rusty: i know you have to be loving this time of year as i am. so nice to 'relax'a bit outside with this cooler weather.

NT: aren't you thankful for containers? they can pop some color onto your porch even in the worst of times. you are right-- the county just north of us often freezes when we do not.

joey: ooooo... i hope you can stay cozy. enjoy your fireplace and some warm cider for me too!

kate: most of the time i love being able to garden all year. right now when there are so many other demands on my time it can be challenging. but i don't think i would trade all the white for the green we keep all year... i don't really know though... this is where i've been all my life.

gintoino: thank you for stopping by... i'm glad you have joined bloom day fun! i will be back to visit you again soon.

  11. Your garden is lovely but in a way I'm sad that you don't get some sort of respite in the "winter" months.

As pretty as your garden post was, I was especially taken by your Christmas decor on the top right column. So inviting and bright and cheery and everything I think of when I think of being "home for the holidays."
