today's features

i’m making progress on the flower bed expansion project. after removing the dead grass i repositioned the fountain grass that previously stood in a row at what was the back of the bed. they look so much better now in more of a triangle form and their new home gives way for the plumbago to bush out naturally.

as i was digging up some borrowed variegated liriope from another bed to border the new area, directly above me i heard the tap-tap-tapping of what turned out to be a downy. i’ve seen these little fellows several times lately but failed to capture a decent photo.

press the play button for Downy Woodpecker activity - it is the smallest (6 in) woodpecker in north america. (sorry for the movement while filming. listen carefully and you can hear the voice of the hawks in the background)

it was another outstandingly gorgeous central florida day… crystal clear blue skies and cool in the shade and pleasant in the sun. actually i was distracted from my gardening several times today by the critters presenting themselves all around me. here are some shots of the day.

skipper of some sort????
the monarchs have found the milkweed i planted a few weeks ago. no, this potato vine isn't milkweed, but just prior to this photo two monarchs were on the milkweed. yippee!

  1. I just love those little woodpeckers! Nice job capturing him!

I think your skipper might be a Dorantes Longtail that got his tail nipped off.

Your yard looks especially beautiful to me right now, as everything here is wilted and brown. My bat-faced cuphea was loaded with blooms. 8-{ I saw a little hairstreak that I couldn't ID trying to find a last drop of nectar in the sad, scraggly salvia. The second I touched the camera, he vanished. I hope he found something to sip somewhere.

  3. sophie: i was wondering if the skipper might be a hammock? now that you mention it - i DID see a long-tail with its tail missing on this same photo spree.

jane: thanks- i think the butterflies are loving this weather as much as i am. they are everywhere these past couple of days!

  7. yeah I saw that post. I guess I was looking for some farther away shots to get a full picture of what is going on. Some of us don't get to enjoy your garden in person as much as we would like and I can't picture exactly what you are doing.
