"Possibility and promise greet me each day as I walk out into my garden. My vigor is renewed when I breathe in the earthiness and feel the dirt between my fingers. My garden is a peaceful spot to refresh my soul." Meems

the kiss of rain

Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby. ~Langston Hughes
finally, last night, some much needed rain did some kissing of my earth. it had been over a week (again) since we had any rain. in all my days i don't remember there being an entire week without afternoon thunderstorms in the month of august. something about hurricane dean sucking all the moisture out of our air while it was concentrating its fury on the yucatan and mexico. so it was to be that we were spared the hurricane but not the drought. all living things were happily basking in the after-drippings this morning. all my sleeping beauty friends eagerly preening, chirping, and feeding in what appeared to me a blissful state. maybe that was just my own bliss at being dismissed from hose dragging, hand watering duty for at least 24 hours.

Don't knock the weather; nine-tenths of the people couldn't start a conversation if it didn't change once in a while. ~Kin Hubbard

i chuckled at the truth of this quote (i'm guilty). AND ... apparently i would be minus a few posts. i've given way in my writings about the lack of rain, the abundance of rain, the lack of rain some more and the unforgiving heat wave multiple times the past weeks.

the state of the garden in august (it's almost over - whew!)

The best thing one can do when it's raining is to let it rain. ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

  1. I like your quotes, especially the one by Kin Hubbard. My hubby's parents & sister, who live in a mid-west state, always have a report on the most recent and current weather. Then, of course, my dear one responds with his own report of local conditions. This takes up about 10 minutes of talk time or a paragraph of e-mail. Since weather is an every varying flow of any & all degrees of hot, cold, dry, wet, stormy, calm, partly cloudy, mostly sunny or possible chances of this or that - well, you can see this would consume inordinate amounts of time reporting it. Always a good conversation starter.

We all did enjoy the refreshing rain and drop in the heat index. It is like getting out of the shower when you've been working out in the unrelenting heat all day. So soothing!

I can't wait to see what your winter blogs will be like - what will grow, bloom, freeze, survive, or die back during our Florida cold snaps. It won't be much about rain!

  2. Rain or no rain your landscape is still beautiful! The rain has been a wonderful event each night. John and I ran tonight at 8pm (I know are we crazy or what) but it was just before the rain and there was a nice breeze and the dark clouds were coming in. It was actually kind of nice for a change.

  3. What a great post. Each quote was perfect in its own special way...sort of like your photos! (And your garden spots too.) I'm in love with the rain. Seriously. I love the sound of it, the sight of it, the smell of it, the feel of it...even the taste of it (if it's not dripping off a roof or something). I'm glad you got your rain.

I am reminded of something my dad used to say...must be the mood I'm in tonight, because I keep thinking of things he used to tell me. This one had to do with rain. If it was barely sprinkling, I'd say, "God must have sneezed." But when it was REALLY pouring, my dad always said, "The devil's beating his wife." :o)

  4. That was a nice storm yesterday afternoon and evening...however...I got drenched running from my office to the car. That is not an exaggeration...my hair was dripping. I tried to wait for it to slow down, but it didn't look like it every would. I then had an errand to run in which I got wetter (if that is a real word). By the time I got home (and it took an hour) I looked like something the cat drug in. I know we needed the rain, but really...

  5. sg: it is so true - we can chatter with just about anyone about the weather.

pk: thanks. i just can't do my running at night but i sure admire you for giving it a go.

mlm: if it isn't a lightning storm many times we will open up the doors to the lanai just to fill our senses with the rain's sounds and smells.

jane: i'm sorry you didn't have an umbrella to save your hair from getting soppy. it was definitely not the kind of rain one would want to run through or drive through. it was a gusher.
